Where the bus stops

SSR International Airport sits just off the main Mahébourg road (the A10) at Plaisance/Plaine Magnien. The buses do not enter the airport: the closest stops are on the main road at Madame Dayla / Plaisance, about 1154 m from the arrival terminal along the airport access road (15 min on foot, flat; the last stretch has no pavement, so walk on the verge facing traffic). A taxi to the main road costs about Rs 150–200 if you have luggage. Routes stopping there: 9 10 90 99/99A 198 252 .

Airport staff and taxi drivers will tell you there is no bus. There is; they would rather sell you a Rs 1,500–2,500 transfer. With one suitcase and daylight, the bus is perfectly doable.

Journeys from the airport

Computed by our planner for a 10:00 weekday departure from the terminal, walking to the main road included. Waiting times are estimates from published frequencies, with at least 30 minutes budgeted at every change because connections are not timed.

The main connections explained

Airport → Port Louis: route 198

Route 198 (Mahébourg – Port Louis) runs along the airport road every 15–25 minutes in daytime, first bus before 06:00, last around 18:30. Board towards Port Louis; the ride to Victoria Square takes about 1 h 20 via Rose Belle, Curepipe bypass, Phoenix and the motorway. Fare Rs 44. From Victoria Square you are in the city centre; for the north coast, walk 10 minutes to Immigration Square.

Airport → Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Pereybere

No direct bus. Take 198 to Port Louis, walk to Immigration Square (Transportation Centre) and board any Grand Baie bus (routes 51, 82, 21 and others, every 10–15 minutes). Total 2.5–3.5 hours, about Rs 80–90 in fares. If you land after 15:00 with luggage, a shared transfer or taxi (about Rs 2,000) is the realistic option, because the last northern buses leave Port Louis around 19:00.

Airport → Curepipe, Vacoas, Quatre Bornes

Route 9 (Mahébourg – Curepipe) passes the airport road towards Curepipe about every 20–30 minutes: 45–55 minutes to Curepipe Jan Palach South for Rs 39. Change there for Vacoas and Quatre Bornes, or take 198 and get off at Phoenix.

Airport → Mahébourg and Blue Bay

The easy one. Route 9 or 198 towards Mahébourg: 20–25 minutes, Rs 24. For Blue Bay and Pointe d'Esny, route 90 goes directly from the airport road, or change in Mahébourg.

Airport → Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Le Morne (west coast)

Two changes: 198 to Port Louis Victoria Square, then a Flic en Flac bus (routes 5, 123, 57), 2.5 hours in total; or 9 to Curepipe and a west-coast bus from Curepipe Jan Palach North. Le Morne needs a further change in Baie du Cap or Tamarin: 3 hours or more. For the west coast with luggage, a taxi (Rs 1,800–2,200) is honestly better value for two or more people.

Airport → east coast (Belle Mare, Trou d'Eau Douce, Flacq)

Route 17/17G from Mahébourg to Central Flacq runs up the east coast road; take 9 or 198 to Mahébourg first. Allow 2–2.5 hours to Belle Mare.

Practical tips

  • Timing. Buses run roughly 05:30–18:30 on the airport road, later on Sundays start. Evening arrivals: taxi.
  • Luggage. One suitcase is fine (keep it by your seat or at the front); large trolleys are unwelcome at peak hours.
  • Money. Get small rupee notes at the airport ATM before you walk out; conductors do not accept euros.
  • Going to the airport. Same routes in reverse: ask the conductor for “l'aéroport” and get off at Plaisance; allow 20 minutes for the walk in. Give yourself a full hour of buffer: frequencies are estimates.
