A full trip such as Port Louis to Mahébourg costs Rs 44. Air-conditioned express buses charge more.

How buses work in Mauritius

Buses are the only public transport covering the whole island; the Metro Express light rail links Port Louis, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas and Curepipe. Routes are numbered 1 to 255 and run by the National Transport Corporation (NTC), United Bus Service (UBS), Rose Hill Transport (RHT), Triolet Bus Service (TBS), Mauritius Bus Transport (MBT) and about 120 routes by individual operators and co-operatives. There is no shared ticket: you pay each bus separately.

Timetables are published as frequencies, not exact departures. A typical urban route runs every 5–15 minutes from about 05:30 to 18:30; rural routes every 30–60 minutes and stop earlier. On Sundays and public holidays service starts later and ends earlier. Operators do not publish live bus positions, so the waiting times on our map are estimates: half the published interval for the time of day you choose.

Students travel free on school days between home and school; residents aged 60+ and persons with disabilities travel free with the government bus pass. Getting around Mauritius by bus as a visitor

There is no airport express. Walk or take a taxi to the main road at Plaisance/Plaine Magnien and board route 198 towards Port Louis (about 1 h 20), or route 9 towards Curepipe. For Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches or Pereybere change in Port Louis at Immigration Square (Transportation Centre); for Flic en Flac change in Port Louis or Quatre Bornes; for Mahébourg and Blue Bay take route 198 the other way (20 minutes). Total to the north coast is 2.5–3.5 hours with luggage, so most visitors take a taxi after dark.
